Taiwan's defenses would make it too costly.

With Great Satan's Fleet just over the horizon, PRC can't trash the place with jets and missiles for a week before landing either.

Something to do with free choice one presumes. Since ROC/Taiwan is a fully functional democracy they don't seem to wish to give that up.

And as they are spiritual cousins in a way with America, allying and arming them in the last millennium up to the near future is a wonderful way to remind China there are choices in life besides what ever autocrat party cats in Beijing decide.

Hong Kong and Macao may be an illusion - China knows better than anyone that unarmed citizens are no match for panzers, and neither could withstand a determined mash down if PRC ever deigned it necessary

After all, no one ever tho't out loud about giving up Bundes Republic Deutschland to the DDR.GrEaT sAtAn'S gIrLfRiEnDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09760252542953109449noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6719362718346107647.post-55359592643826515852011-08-24T10:29:49.516-04:002011-08-24T10:29:49.516-04:00I'm a right-wing kind of guy, but I'm not ...I'm a right-wing kind of guy, but I'm not so clear on this ROC vs PRC situation; it's one potential war that doesn't make sense to me. Short of nuclear weapons, can Taiwan possibly be victorious in a serious Chinese invasion attempt?

Wouldn't it be better for Taiwan if they could work out a deal with the mainland like Hong Kong and Macao did -- two systems one country? Total independence and democracy are great, but isn't the balance of forces just too overwhelming?

It's not like we're talking about two cultures foreign to each other. The cultural differences between the mainland and Taiwan -- up to the Communist takeover of the mainland -- are relatively minor; they're practically one people. And the Party seems to have changed its tactics -- softened its hand -- since the Great Cultural Revolution. Has life altered so dramatically for Hong Kongers since the year 2000? What am I missing?Marc D.noreply@blogger.com
