"The US shifted its policy today, saying it is now willing to meet one on one with North Korea if that is helpful to bring Pyongyang back to the nuclear negotiations.

US envoy Stephen Bosworth got the green light from the other members of the 6-party talks, negotiations to rid Pyongyang of its nuclear program, during meetings in the region in recent days.

North Korea has extended an invitation for Bosworth to visit Pyongyang, but officials say it’s unclear where or when a meeting could take place.

“It's designed to convince North Korea to come back to the six- party process and to take affirmative steps towards denuclearization,” State Department spokesman PJ Crowley said of the decision to meet.

Speaking on background, a senior US official said: “Our assessment, after consulting with the other parties in the six-party process, is that if a bilateral discussion can be an effective mechanism to get North Korea to come back to the six-party process… so that we can remind them of what their obligations are and to push them to take affirmative steps… then that would be a potentially useful step.”

North Korea has recently said it will never return to the nuke talks… so is there an expectation now that they might?

“We’ll wait and see,” the senior official said.

Dear Mr. President:

The situation in Afghanistan is grave and deteriorating. This is in part the legacy of an under resourced war effort that has cost us and the Afghans dearly. The Taliban has retaken important parts of the country, while a flawed U.S. strategy has led American forces into secondary efforts far away from critical areas. However, we remain convinced that the fight against the Taliban is winnable, and it is in the vital national security interest of the United States to win it.

You’ve called Afghanistan an "international security challenge of the highest order, " and stated that "the safety of people around the world is at stake." Last month you told a convention of veterans, “Those who attacked America on 9/11 are plotting to do so again. If left unchecked, the Taliban insurgency will mean an even larger safe haven from which al Qaeda would plot to kill more Americans. So this is not only a war worth fighting. This is fundamental to the defense of our people.”

We fully agree with those sentiments. We congratulate you on the leadership you demonstrated earlier this year when you decided to deploy approximately 21,000 additional troops and several thousand civilian experts as a part of a serious counterinsurgency campaign. Your appointments of General Stanley McChrystal as top commander and David Rodriguez as second in command in Afghanistan exemplified the seriousness of purpose you spoke about during the campaign. We are heartened to see that the much needed overhaul of our military operations has begun.

Since the announcement of your administration’s new strategy, we have been troubled by calls for a drawdown of American forces in Afghanistan and a growing sense of defeatism about the war. With General McChrystal expected to request additional troops later this month, we urge you to continue on the path you have taken thus far and give our commanders on the ground the forces they need to implement a successful counterinsurgency strategy. There is no middle course. Incrementally committing fewer troops than required would be a grave mistake and may well lead to American defeat. We will not support half-measures that repeat the errors of the past.

This is, as you have said, a war that we cannot afford to lose. Failure to defeat the Taliban would likely lead to a return of al Qaeda to Afghanistan and could result in terrorist attacks on the United States or our allies. An abandonment of Afghanistan would further destabilize the region, and put neighboring Pakistan and its nuclear arsenal at risk. All our efforts to support Islamabad’s fight against the Taliban in Pakistan’s tribal regions will founder if we do not match those achievements on the other side of that country’s porous northwestern border.

As you observed during the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign, “You don't muddle through the central front on terror and you don't muddle through going after bin Laden. You don't muddle through stamping out the Taliban.” We completely agree. Having “muddled through” in Afghanistan for years, this is no longer a politically, strategically, or morally sustainable approach.

Mr. President, you have put in place the military leadership and sent the initial resources required to begin bringing this war to a successful conclusion. The military leadership has devised a strategy that will reverse the errors of previous years, free Afghans from the chains of tyranny, and keep America safe. We call on you to fully resource this effort, do everything possible to minimize the risk of failure, and to devote the necessary time to explain, soberly and comprehensively, to the American people the stakes in Afghanistan, the route to success, and the cost of defeat.

With the continued bravery of our troops, and your continued full support for them and their command team, America and our allies can and will prevail in Afghanistan.

Sudanese Tete' A Tete'

Sudan is a pitiful place - despite tons of resources like oil and natural gas or the biggest hood in all AFRICOM - bordering 9 nation states, the literacy rate is just over 60% (don't laugh! Way better than Pakistan's!!) ravaged by diseases, militias, civil wars, genocide, artocities, Chinese trading consortiums and the world's only sitting President Field Marshal For Life with a warrant on him for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

44's current Bad Girls have been unapologetic about Sudan and the need for - how would the daemoneoconically H0T! avatar of America Unbound put it - changing the nature of Sudan.

Changing nature can be done several ways just like changing regimes. The old school way at the point of the world famous M16 and a thousand cruise missiles - or the fun friendly way like "Democratic Imperatives" implies.

A few hours after news from a blogger roundtable with Great Satan"s Envoy to Sudan, Scott Gration, filters out a few things, members of the advocacy community spoke out with FP about their reactions:

ON MEETING WITH SUDAN'S PRESIDENT OMAR EL-BASHIR

[I]f the U.S. collapsed under the weight of perceived expediency and sold its moral authority for some belief that meeting the big man, the strong man, would actually be dispositive in moving the peace process forward, I think it would be a tragic mistake. It would undermine what leverage the United States has, which is rooted in part in moral authority and in part in its advocacy for those victims and survivors of the wars in Southern Sudan and Darfur."

I'm glad to hear that General Gration doesn't plan to meet with President Bashir. U.S. officials as a general matter should refrain from meeting with indicted war criminals and should pressure other governments to do likewise."

What's worrying [about the idea that Gration doesn't rule out a meeting with Bashir] is that we're going to play this on Bashir's terms. And his interests aren't necessarily the interests of
the rest of Sudan. The advocacy community that I'm a part of is not suggesting, and never has suggested, that the special envoy should not talk with the government of Sudan. But that doesn't have to be done with Bashir."

ON U.S. SUDAN POLICY

[We believe that U.S. policy, implemented by Gration, is] heading into dangerous territory in both Darfur and in the North-South process...[On the North-South issue,] a dangerous mistake that's being made is to allow the U.S. government to be part of a process that includes the [ruling] National Congress Party, [Southern] SPLM, and United States talking about renegotiating elements of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

This allows us to be perceived as willing to renegotiate certains things that have already been agreed upon...instead of renegotiating things that are hard, we need to demand strict implementation [of the peace process] and work to build a multilateral coalition that is willing to impose consequences for non-implemention."

Bloodthirsty

The most recent "Love it to death" feature sparked a ton of hits and some feedback mainly from confauxderates and the anti war - any war gang.

Mostly disappointed, disgusted or flat turned off that anyone could give the appearance of laughingly celebrating the alledged incineration of alledged innocents.

So, perhaps it's best to clear that up right now.

As best understood, Taleban hijacked a couple of fat petrol trucks from a NATO motorpool - chock full of fuel and took off for parts unknown 'cept to them.

Along the way - the trucks got bogged down not far from a village and in an attempt to lighten the load and get the trucks rolling again, Taleban appearantly tried to win some hearts and minds by draining off petrol to give to the villagers.

Unbeknownest to the Taleban or the village -- Bundeswehr troops watched the event through field glasses and called in an airstrike that dang killed tons of Taleban and villagers.

Oh! The humanity!

Think Machiavellian for a sec. Perhaps, Taleban took a short cut through innocent civilian rich turf by accident or design. Or, perhaps instead, Taleban knew exactly where they were headed with ill gotten booty and the village was a safe place to recruit, hang out, rest and re provision.

Either way is fine. The underscored lesson here is that - right or wrong -Taleban functions as missile magnets.

Thus, in order to avoid getting caught up to the perfumed gardens of paradise with intolerant, girl fearing, head chopping, finger chopping creeps and jerks - stay the heck away from the missile magnets.

And to the elderly 'not in my name', handwringer ex hippie weepers - raised on one of the Bigger than Baby Jesus cats solo tunes like "Give Peace a Chance" that ask how could anyone be so cold the answer is:

Easy!

An aperitif like 911 in our tender, formative years along with a pro choice mentality, scores of slasher films that score big box office wise, a natural rebellion against moral relativism and heavy tunes like "Let the bodies hit the floor" have allied to grant a cultural devaluation of life and a kill our enemies anytime, anywhere and anyway outlook.

Besides all of that -- it's the TALEBAN.

Of all the creeps to p away empathy, sympathy, affinity and regret -- Taleban (and this goes for their homegrown 'innocent' fan base too) shouldn't even be on the list.

Didn't mean to give just a laughingly cold hearted appearance - actually meant to be about as subtle as a depleted uranium round flaming up a T 80. To 'literary' bathe in their blood, racing down the street naked screaming "Go! Great Satan! Go!"

Bloodthirsty?

All the barriers to fun, free choice, pro choice the anti war cats dismantled years ago actually created new American avatars, a laughing race of free boys and girls that shed no tears for enemies or their enablers.
